Mozilla is hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the most number of downloads of an application in a day, on the release of its Firefox 3 Web browser.
There is currently no official Guinness World Record for the total number of downloads of an application in a day. During the first 24 hours of Firefox 3’s release, Mozilla is aiming for over 1.6 million downloads and hoping for five million, according to a Mozilla spokesperson.
The final release date for Firefox 3 has not yet been fixed. However, depending on how well Firefox 3 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) is received, the final version of Firefox 3 should be out in mid-June, according to the spokesperson. Firefox 3 RC2 is expected in the first week of June, the spokesperson added.
Mozilla is encouraging its community of over 175 million users to sign up on the Spread Firefox marketing site to receive Firefox 3 on the day of its release, to host download parties, and to put Firefox badges on websites and blogs.
Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) had “fixes and improvements to platform features, to improve security, Web compatibility and stability”, according to Mozilla.

Panda Security has upgraded its online malware scanner, ActiveScan to version 2.0. Panda said the upgrade was a response to “the growing complexity of modular-built intelligent malware, such as rootkits.”
ActiveScan 2.0 draws on Panda’s flagship ‘Collective Intelligence’ infrastructure, which takes security and malware information directly from its user community.
In this upgrade ActiveScan stores “collected behavioural patterns of programs, file traces, and any new malware samples gathered globally, which are then automatically analysed, classified and correlated with PandaLabs’ malware knowledge base.”
When new malware is found, Panda’s system generates ‘vaccines’ to disinfect malware. To try out the system users are directed to the Panda URL, www.infectedornot.com. The site allows single PCs to be scanned for malware, and even entire company networks.
Panda added that ActiveScan 2.0 “is compatible with all antivirus programs in the AV market,” and can use both Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers.

Microsoft Corp plans to give users of the next version of its Windows operating system touch screen controls as one option for controlling the software, its top executives said on Tuesday.
Chairman Bill Gates and Chief Executive Steve Ballmer showed off new Windows features based on software it calls “multi-touch” that will be part of Windows 7, the next version of Windows, which Ballmer said was due out in late 2009.
The ability to use touch to give users fingertip control of their screens could help revolutionize how computer desktops and mobile phones are controlled and would be an alternative to existing mice, keyboard and pen-based user controls.
During a joint interview that kicked off the Wall Street Journal’s three-day D: All Things Digital conference, an annual gathering of the computer industry elite taking place north of San Diego, Ballmer said touch screen controls was one example of how Microsoft would improve on existing Windows software.

Once customers exceed the allocated data quota, download speeds will be shaped to 64 kbps.
